On October 5, 2023, the Michelin Guide announced its most recent Vancouver selections. As this is only our second year as a Michelin acknowledged city, there was a great deal of anticipation over whether any stars would be lost, any additional stars would be gained, and who the new list additions would be. Here are the top takeaways.
The first award given by host and local foodie Mijune Pak was the Michelin Exceptional Cocktails Award. It went to Suyo’s bar manager Max Curzon-Price. He co-created the cocktail program at the modern Peruvian restaurant with Andrew Kong. Their drink menu is inspired by landscapes like the Amazonian Rainforest and the Andean Mountains.
A new prize for Vancouver is Michelin’s Young Chef Award. Chef Warren Chow of Wildlight Kitchen + Bar was selected. Wildlight was added to Michelin’s list of Recommended restaurants in September and now they have been doubly acknowledged. At Wildlight, Chef Chow is inspired by the rugged West Coast and nature’s bounty.
The winner of Michelin’s Outstanding Service Award went to a restaurant that was also doubly acknowledged. Okeya Kyujiro won for their exceptional service and was also the only new restaurant to win a star. The food on Okeya Kyujiro’s twenty course omakase tasting menu is exquisite but the service experience is akin to a live performance with Chef Takuya Matsuda front and centre.
Other restaurants were given their first Michelin nod by joining the Bib Gourmand list. These included Sushi Hil, Farmer’s Apprentice, Motonobu Udon, Seaport City Seafood, and Karma Indian Bistro.
From Bib Gourmand and Recommended restaurants to Michelin Starred restaurants, the French guide does try to cover a budget range, which means most Vancouverites can check out the newly acknowledged restaurants, while saving up for a special occasion omakase feast at Okeya. —Bronwyn Lewis
