Cornucopia: Beyond the Bounty

October 20, 2016

20 years running, Whistler’s annual Cornucopia food and beverage extravaganza has earned its reputation as one of the must-attend gastronomic events of the year. In addition to celebrating the best of BC food and wine, the not-for-profit has also collectively raised over $500,000 for charitable funds for Whistler sports and community related initiatives.

Of particular interest at this year’s festival, taking place November 10 to 20, is the branching out of the inaugural Wine Summit, a new entity of Cornucopia that focuses specifically on the wine industry, with the intention of celebrating, collaborating, and educating on all vine-related issues in British Columbia.

But before you engross yourself in juicy follies of this epicurean spectacular, take a moment to recognize what this event really means.

This newly formed summit speaks volumes to the success BC has realized in the wine industry. BC vintners are devoted and innovative, and the quality wines they are producing have gained international recognition. The residual buzz draws in wine folk from all corners of the globe, who are interested in listening to, or adding to, the discussion on the politics, economics and culture of BC wine.

Hosted by the ever-eloquent Michaela Morris (wine writer/educator), speakers at this years summit include Madeline Puckette (Wine Folly), Jamie Goode (UK wine writer/wine judge), Cynthia Enns (Laughing Stock), Karen Graham (political commentator/winedrops.ca), and many more. In addition to seminars (which range from Icons in the Industry to Internet in the Wine World), there are educational sessions for wine newbies and wine novices alike; there are art sessions for Picasso lovers who don’t want to put down their glass; there are wine tours, wine tastings, and hopefully you can avoid the wine spins. And if you can fandangle a ticket, make your way to the Poutine and Champagne After Party, which requires no further explanation. Dress your best, drink the best, and celebrate BC wine! —Laura Starr
