Sun Safety First

June 16, 2017

Keeping kids’ skin protected from the sun is job 1 for parents. However, struggling to apply sunscreen (harder than launching a space shuttle, most days), keep hats on (does Krazy Glue wash out of hair?) and remembering to pack every sun-safe cover we own to fit the baby carrier, stroller and car seat every time we leave the house is enough to make us say—excuse our language—screw it!

Fortunately, a Vancouver-based mom has come up with a smart solution to at least one of the problems mentioned above (we’re still waiting for hat glue to be invented). Trisha Clark’s company, Little Goat, produces, in Canada, a versatile carrier cover made of breathable cotton with a UPF 50 rating and snaps that allow it to fit a range of baby totes, including carriers, car seats, strollers and even bike seats. "I had a look around at what was available and wasn’t completely happy with any of the options," says Clark. "I’ve always enjoyed designing and sewing so I set out to make myself a cover. I wanted it shaped in such a way that it could cover bare arms and legs completely, instead of having to put on long pants or slathering on sunscreen—or, if baby is too young for sunscreen—before heading out for a walk."

The result, which comes in your choice of blue, grey or pink for just $52 apiece, is pure genius. And, if you’re wondering where Clark came up with the name of her company, well, "I love goats!" she says. "Once upon a time I milked goats in France for a summer and fell in love with the curious creatures." Works for us! —Noa Nichol
