Holiday trips are some of the most sentimental, starting with packing gifts in an old heirloom suitcase before boarding a flight home, a ferry to friends or a train ride with the in-laws. Back in the city weeks later, unpacking gifts from loved ones inevitably brings an uplifting energy to the new year. Pack away these five tips for travelling with gifts, which keeps presents safe when traversing from the North to South pole. —Julia Dumbrell
Keep Track in a Carry-On: Just in case the suitcase goes missing, valuable gifts are best kept track of in a carry-on, keeping precious jewellery presents as close to us as we can.
Take Extra Care: Pack the fragile gifts last to ensure they don’t break. It’s best to keep mom’s vase in its bubble wrap and box, then bury the package within knit sweaters for the trip.
Wait to Wrap: Whether it’s a gift bag with tissue or tightly taped wrapping paper, travel officials may need to see what’s inside. To cover us, we always pack a small, separate bag of wrapping paper, ribbons and tags.
Ship Gifts Before: For those who savvily shop online, consider entering the address of the holiday host’s house. With a subtle heads up and a wink, this could save any holiday stress.
Leave Extra Room: Lucky celebrators may receive even more than they give. Allowing some extra space in the carry-on could be wise, just in case we’re on the nice list.
