5 Best On Shoes To Meet Your Running Goals

December 4, 2023

Earlier this year I set out on a lofty goal, which was learning how to run. Whether it’s for physical or mental health, running is often considered one of the most accessible forms of fitness. Once the technique is down, all you need is a good pair of running shoes to start moving but how do you determine the best type of shoes for your goals? Fret not, I recently caught up with the On team to get the ins and outs of selecting the right runners for any distance or skill level. —Vicki Duong

for an ultra cushy run. Appropriately named the Cloudeclipse ($230), these shoes feature On’s thickest midsole that collapses on impact. What does this mean for the average runner? It means strides where the double-layered sole takes on all the impact instead of your joints while the slightly curved shape adds to a neutral feel that enhances the way your feet naturally roll while on the move.

for in the rain. If you’re on the West Coast like us, you know that avoiding the rain is a futile goal. For my wet runs, I opt for the Cloudrunner Waterproof ($200), a rain-resistant version of their classic go-to running shoe. The waterproof mesh stays breathable while keeping your feet dry plus the design targets stability for added support and grip on slippery surfaces.

for speed. Ideal for when you’re really looking to level up your runs from casual paces to new personal bests, the Cloudflow 4 ($200) is one of On’s most lightweight options to help you pick up your speed. Think minimal cushioning and highly responsive to keep your treads light. Bonus: an ultra flexible sole encourages you to lean forward to build momentum and agility.

for uneven terrains. The same way we use different shoes for running on a treadmill versus running outdoors, picking out shoes for trail running is of the utmost importance to prevent injury. Cloudvistas ($180) boasts a grippy sole designed to take on any terrain, plus is made out of partially recycled materials making it good for the outdoors in multiple ways.

for day to day. Sometimes you want the perks of a running shoe while not actually running. The On Cloudnova ($200) features performance technology packaged in a casual sneaker silhouette.
