Pablo Picasso created a prolific amount of art (The estimate is at 50,000 works!) much of which was inspired by the women in his life. In partnership with the Vancouver Art Gallery and their current exhibit Picasso: The Artist and His Muses, The Shangri-La Hotel Vancouver is presenting a series of dinner tasting menus at Market by Jean-Georges titled The Muses Dinner, and has introduced a cultural accommodation package for the art savvy traveler. —Michelle Gadd

The Muses

We sat down at Market for the first of six menus; this one cultivated around the relationship Picasso had with his lover and muse Fernande Olivier. Olivier is credited for curing Picasso’s blues, taking him into the Rose Period as well as a comparatively harsher and more innovative style of cubism.

Chef Ken Nakano and his kitchen married together these disparate elements into a wonderfully executed, mouthwatering menu. Chef Nakano shared that the tasting menu was born out of, “Playing around with a saucepan” keeping “art and colour in mind.” This was seen in the Foie Gras Terrine and Strawberry Mousse, delightfully cubed, and the sauces applied to the plate in deft paint brush strokes. Rose colour played a strong role in the beverages, as did the distinct taste of Absinthe; famously known as being Picasso’s drink of choice (Be forewarned: Picasso liked his drinks strong).
