Find Perfect Maritime Bliss on Prince Edward Island

October 1, 2015

peiWhat Prince Edward Island lacks in size it more than makes up for in stunning beaches, friendly locals, must-see attractions and delicious lobster, particularly in and around its capital city, Charlottetown. (Did we mention the lobster?)

stay: Check into the stylish Holman Grand Hotel in downtown Charlottetown and you’ll be well situated to see many within-walking-distance city sights (the Aveda amenities, pillow-top bed and sweeping, historic views don’t hurt, either). peisavour: Order a lobster roll (or two; we won’t tell) at Dave’s Lobster, where the “Some Fancy” menu offering includes four mouthwatering ounces of lobster warmed with butter, lemon and garlic and stuffed into a fresh split-topped bun. For dessert, Cows Ice Cream serves such inventive scoops as Chip Chip Hooray (chocolate-covered chips, vanilla ice cream and a salted toffee swirl) in signature fresh-baked waffle cones.

peisail: Board a lobster boat to learn all about these cool crustaceans (did you know lobsters can regenerate their legs, claws and even organs?), plus the business of getting them onto your plate. A trip with Captain Mark Jenkins of Top Notch Charters will reveal all this and more—and let you enjoy a traditional lobster supper aboard the boat, to boot! peisea: Lucky Prince Edward Islanders are blessed with both red- and white-sand beaches to play upon. Just 15 minutes from Charlottetown is Brackley Beach—a sandy white escape complete with dunes and (in summer) a supervised swimming area. To see shores of the red variety, head to Argyle Shore Provincial Park.

peiside trip: The grand old home-turned-hotel called Dalvay By the Sea is a National Historic Site of Canada, though Anne of Green Gables fans will better recognize it as the White Sands Hotel in Road to Avonlea. Not only is lunch in the elegant dining room fit for a queen (save room for the legendary Sticky Date Pudding), actual royalty in the form of Prince William and Kate popped in here for a visit during their honeymoon. Dalvay By the Sea, 16 Cottage Cres., Dalvay, 902-672-2048, www.dalvaybythesea.com
