Say hello to The Maker: a lifestyle fragrance brand (think décor, gift and fragrance items) that started as a Hudson, New York hotel. In terms of the fragrances, the collection is inspired by travel fantasies the brand’s founders either lived or long for at The Maker Hotel. Lev Glazman, co-founder and fragrance architect, created these perfumes with layers of rich, sultry notes amplified by arousing pheromones for undeniably sensual scents. The gender-inclusive fragrances are clean and responsibly made. We chatted with Lev and co-founder Alina Roytberg, to learn more. —Noa Nichol
When and why did you launch The Maker? What niche were/are you aiming to fill?
The Maker Hotel launched in August 2020 and The Maker fragrance collection launched in December 2021.
Alina and I love to travel, and we’ve been fortunate enough to visit places all over the world. Having innate curiosity and a passion to create, for many years we recognized there was white space. That an intimate, highly curated concept was missing. We always loved and appreciated design, we wanted to share with the world our sensibility and unique point of view.
What began as a bespoke hotel redefining the bohemian travel experience in Hudson, NY, has expanded into a multi-faceted lifestyle brand with a fragrance collection inspired by inhibitions melting away— bottling hotel travel fantasies we’ve lived or long to. Our scents and spaces awaken the senses, inspiring you to become the maker of your own sensuality.
What products do you currently offer, and what makes them unique/standouts?
The inspiration behind our new Fragrance Collection is based on travel fantasies, such as liberation, sensuality, connection, love, and confidence. Layers of rich, sultry notes capture our bohemian sensibility for undeniably sensual scents. They are all clean and responsibly made and gender inclusive.
Our latest fragrance Lover is our bestseller. After a year of development and endless fragrance compositions, I finally experienced Lover as I smelled it in my head: A fragrance that slowly unveils itself as it uniquely adapts to the wearer, like lovers that slowly discover each other’s souls. Lover is brought to life differently by each person who wears it, letting them leave their own aura behind for their lover to remember. This fragrance—and all the emotions it encompasses—has been inside of me for a very long time. To be able to finally share Lover with the world and collectively celebrate intimacy and connection together moves me beyond measure.
In Sephora Canada, we currently offer seven beautiful Eau de Parfums and four candles. Fragrances include Libertine, Paradiso, Wild, Fire, Stag, Naked and our newest addition, Lover. Candles include Artist, Spiritus, Gardener and Architect. All are available to shop at select Sephora stores and at Sephora.ca.
How does sustainability play a role?
We believe in making things sustainably chic. We are committed to providing luxurious spaces and products at a cost to us and not the environment. In today’s world it’s imperative to be environmentally responsible.
Everything from the formula and packaging are clean and sustainable. All components are refillable, can be recycled and upcycled. The formula is vegan, made without phthalates, parabens, formaldehydes, and synthetic dyes. We are Clean and Planet Aware by Sephora, which is their highest clean standard and a classification we are proud to hold.
In choosing a personal fragrance, what tips/advice would you give?
The power of fragrance is the ability to transport you. I always like to wear fragrances based on my mood and time of year. When I wake up in the morning and if I’m wanting to uplift my spirits, I love wearing Libertine because it gives me this effervescent energy. If I wanting to feel sultry, Lover is what I reach for. We encourage those looking for a scent to pick something that will make them feel sensual, lose their inhibitions, and evoke confidence.
What is each of your favourite fragrance in the current collection?
People always ask us this question, and it’s hard to choose.
Right now, I love pairing Libertine with Lover. They are both amazing on their own, but together they create this beautiful scent aura. Lover has these beautiful warm woods, a little oud, fig and jasmine sambac, and I love bringing citrus in, like Libertine, to add freshness.
For spring, Wild makes me feel enveloped in beautiful, cozy and warm flowers. It has tuberose, paired with luscious peach that smells so velvety. I also love burning the Gardener Candle as the weather gets nicer to make me feel like I’m immersed in a green garden.

I love citrus and floral scents and unique scents that are unusual to me – I don’t mean corpse flower unusual more like I don’t want something too sweet. Does the oud note come from the musical instrument or is it just woody?
