If you are lucky enough to be planning a summer vacation to Italy, we’ve curated an essential packing list for three of Italy’s top destinations. Italy is known for many things: incredible food, ancient architecture, world-famous art and being one of the best dressed countries in the world. Each of Italy’s cities has its own unique vibe and dress code. Here is a fool proof packing list for three cities, so you can just focus on taking it all in—from the history, to the architecture, to the most delicious gelato you’ve ever tasted! —Sheila O’Neill
Beach Day on the Amalfi Coast
Of all the incredible beaches in the world, the Amalfi Coast boasts some of the most beautiful. Decorated in colourful parasols, you’ll want to spend all day by the ocean.
Packing list:
- A large sunhat, or bucket hat, like this one from Prada
- Large oval sunglasses with dark lenses, the Celine Triomphe are perfect
- Chic one-piece bathing suit
- Breathable cover up
- Pair of slides to easily slip on and off, the Hermès Orans are a classic
- Large raffia bag to tote your Italian Vogue, sunscreen, headphones and phone, this one from Loewe is a great size
Tourist Day in Rome
Rome is one of the most historic cities in the world with a lot to see. For Rome you’ll want to focus on practicality and there are a few things to keep in mind. First of all you’ll likely be doing a lot of walking, on cobblestones nonetheless so a practical pair of shoes is a must. Though it’s going to be hot in the city, keep in mind that some of the places you might want to visit will have more conservative dress codes, for example The Vatican requires shoulders and knees to be covered. Lastly, the unfortunate truth is that large tourist cities in Europe during the summer do deal with crime such as pick pocketing, so designer purses, or bags that can’t be secured closed are not ideal.
Packing list:
- A crisp button down shirt you can throw on for visits to The Vatican and other places with a dress code
- A breathable pair of wide leg trousers – for example Aritzia Effortless Pants in a linen blend that helps to cover up, while keeping you cool in the heat
- A handbag you can fasten closed and keep under your arm is ideal
- A comfortable and supportive pair of shoes – think New Balance 327s, or Adidas Sambas
Instagrammable Photos in Milan
Milan’s historical sites, such as the Duomo and the The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II serve as the most incredible backdrop for Instagram ootd’s. Milan is also one of the fashion capitals of the world, so don’t be afraid to take your outfit to the next level.
Packing List:
- A chic pair of sunglasses
- Your favourite summer dress, this one from House of CB just might be the dress of the summer
- A leather handbag; for something super-chic, go for a piece from Gucci‘s new Lido collection (see slideshow above) that pays homage to the enchanting allure of coastal living, drawing inspiration from the charming beach clubs or “lidos”‘” that adorn Italy’s storied coastlines.
- A pair of strappy sandals – mind the cobblestones!
Don’t forget your camera to capture every moment and your appetite, because as amazing as Italian fashion is, the food is even better, bon voyage!
