It’s the unexpected details that make a holiday truly memorable—the sort of thing you stumble into by chance. You might think you’re familiar with Whistler, but may we recommend a few unexpected experiences that might just take your breath away?
go botanical: Hikes get the rainbow treatment come summer, when wildflowers are in full bloom. Trek Blackcomb’s Lakeside Loop for a dazzling array of indigo Arctic lupines, hot-pink fireweed and golden Rocky Mountain monkeyflowers at the height of their glory. Trails range in difficultly and guides are available to tell you exactly how to use (and not to use) mountain arnica to heal your calf bruise right up.
flambé away: Desserts aren’t lit on fire frequently enough. So, when we noticed that Crepe Montagne (a sweet, tucked-away Whistler must) offers a Martinique, we indulged in a moment of childish glee watching our banana-stuffed, rum-drizzled crepe shoot into a tall, blue flame. Gasps and gluttony ensued.
star gaze: Turn right at the Green Lake seaplane station by Nicklaus North Golf Course and amble down the straight-from-a-fairytale woodsy path until you find access to the lake’s long, central sandspit. During daytime it’s a playground for sun worshippers and sand-castle builders but, at night? It’s the most romantic star-gazing spot this side of the universe. Bring blankets, flasks and those of whom you’re fond.
Prepare to be very pleasantly surprised. —Adrienne Matei
