Bottles upon bottles line our local liquor and wine store shelves, calling us to take them home, but, when it comes to toasting the holidays—not to mention, ringing in the New Year (key)—there’s only one sparkling choice for us: Prosecco Superiore DOCG. Here’s why—and how to enjoy it to the max:
affordable luxury. This remarkable range of Italian white wines, available across Canada, from British Columbia to Ontario and all points in-between, is our natural, go-to alternative to Champagne when it comes to celebrations … and (who are we kidding?) daily sipping, too.
location matters. The important lesson (we’ve learned) when it comes to choosing Prosecco is that they are not all created equal. While, true, every Prosecco comes from Northern Italy, the very best Prosecco Superiore DOCG grapes are grown approximately 50 kilometres from Venice, on the cool, steep hills in the Conegliano Valdobbiadene of the country’s northeast—an region so precious, it is a candidate for UNESCO World Heritage Site status. The grape itself is the Glera, showing fruity and floral notes of citrus, apple and pear.

Not only that, the name "Prosecco Superiore DOCG" on the bottle signifies the top quality and highest standards in the vineyard and winery, plus concentrated flavour and balance within each festive sip. Best of all, while immensely enjoyable on its own, Prosecco Superiore DOCG, produced in fully sparkling (spumante) and lightly sparkling (frizzante) styles, is versatile enough to pair with almost any cuisine. Come holiday time, you’ll see us sipping it with toasted nuts by the fire, with the seafood Christmas dinner that is tradition on one side of our family and alongside our dessert panettone.

Prosecco Superiore will be at Vino in Villa, an exciting annual event that takes place in the breathtaking hilly area of production, in Northeast Italy, over the third weekend of May. The festival, devoted to the celebrated wine, food and terroir of the region, which, as we mentioned, is a candidate for UNESCO World Heritage Site status, has been running for 21 consecutive years, and is definitely not to be missed!
