11 New Releases Sparked By The Lipstick Effect

July 16, 2024

Ever wonder why there are so many lipstick launches this year? It’s not just about trends—it’s the “lipstick effect”! This concept, coined by Professor Juliet Schor in her 1998 book The Overspent American, suggests that during tough economic times, women treat themselves to little luxuries like lipsticks. These affordable pick-me-ups offer an emotional boost without breaking the bank. When money is tight, women might stop buying expensive beauty products and instead splurge on luxe lipsticks to flaunt in public. Leonard Lauder, chairman of Estée Lauder noticed that there was an increase of lipstick sales in 2001 after 9/11 and another uptick in sales in 2008 after the recession. The theory resurfaced again in 2022 while many were recovering from the financial effects of the pandemic. Since then the cost of living has undeniably risen and it seems like makeup brands have noticed because this year has seen a surge in new lip product launches. If you’re thinking of adding a new lippie to your collection here’s what we think of this year’s lip launches! —Mursal Rahman
