With certain influencers seemingly forgetting how readily available it is in store and making their own gum at home, we thought we’d give you a recipe so you could do the same! In fact, making homemade bubble gum is a fun and simple project! Here’s a basic recipe to try at home:
Ingredients:
- 1/3 cup gum base (available online or at candy-making supply stores)
- 1/4 cup powdered sugar (plus extra for dusting)
- 2 tbsp corn syrup
- 1/2 tsp glycerin (optional but helps with texture)
- A few drops of flavoring oil (peppermint, fruit, etc.)
- Food coloring (optional)
Equipment:
- Microwave-safe bowl
- Spoon for stirring
- Rolling pin
- Wax paper or parchment paper
Instructions:
- Melt the gum base: Place the gum base in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave it in short bursts of 10-15 seconds until it becomes melted and pliable.
- Add corn syrup and glycerin: Stir in the corn syrup and glycerin (if using) until well combined.
- Mix in flavor and coloring: Add a few drops of flavoring oil and food coloring. Stir well to evenly distribute the flavor and color.
- Add powdered sugar: Gradually mix in the powdered sugar, stirring until the mixture starts to come together. It will be sticky at first, but keep mixing!
- Knead the mixture: Dust a clean surface with powdered sugar. Pour the gum mixture onto the surface and begin kneading it like dough. Continue kneading until it’s smooth and stretchy.
- Roll out the gum: Using a rolling pin, roll out the gum to your desired thickness between two sheets of wax paper or parchment paper.
- Cut and shape the gum: Cut the gum into pieces or shapes of your choice using a knife or cookie cutter.
- Let it cool: Allow the gum to cool and set for 30 minutes to an hour.
- Store or enjoy: Your homemade bubble gum is ready to chew! Store any leftover gum in an airtight container to keep it fresh.
Enjoy your homemade bubble gum!
