From Couch to Chic: 7 Stylish Ways to Wear Your Sweatpants

September 20, 2024

Let’s be real: sweatpants are heaven — dare we say, the epitome of comfort. Their versatility extends to casual errands or trips to the gym, but we all know these cozy bottoms can be so much more. Sure, they are comfortable, and it feels good to lounge around the house in a pair, but wear them right, and they may just be the thing to go out with.

As one of the closet staples that is not going away any time soon, why not do more with your sweatpants? Forget about the frumpy ones that dare not make it outside the door; there are form-fitting sweatpants that will look good on you whether you are running errands around town or going for that brunch with bottomless mimosas.

Styling Sweatpants & a Sweatshirt for Everyday

Before we go into any audacious outfits, why not start with the classic sweatpants and sweatshirt combo? It’s easy to style and comfortable to wear if you are headed for the mall. With this look, you can interchange sweatpants and sweatshirts to achieve different combos with the same clothes, so getting a bunch of sweatshirts is not such a bad idea. The thing about bulk sweatshirts is that you get to choose different colors and styles and also pick a size that suits you well.

A little color blocking will do you a lot of good here. Pick a bold color for the sweatshirt and something more subtle like a gray or brown for the sweatpants. Lastly, the shoes make this outfit pop—so add a pair of trendy sneakers, and you are good to go. Now that we know what sweats we shall be styling, let’s get into the outfit ideas.

Casual Chic for Gloomy Days

The day is gloomy and gray, but you don’t have to let it suck all your energy. As a matter of fact, it might just be the perfect weather for an outfit that includes sweatpants. Atop, this outfit needs that ribbed bodysuit you haven’t worn in a while — preferably black. Your outfit is almost done. For now, you can move around the house a bit more freely. Add a white suede trench coat and a bucket hat when you are leaving the house. For earrings, we’ll go with a simple hoop style with or without pearls. Finish off the look with a pair of heeled sandals that add a little more height, and you are good to go.

Out and About in the City (The Urban Edge)

Sometimes, you just want to stay in the house, but then you have to leave and get things done. Well, why not trade the tight jeans for a pair of joggers? Bold, true, but you’ll like the outfit. Substituting black jeans for black joggers still keeps your outfit intact and also adds a bit more street flair to it. An outfit like this would go well with a knit vest that you wear with a leather blazer. Find a chic sling bag in your closet and throw that on as well. Accessorize with a curb necklace and earrings, and finish the look off with a pair of boots.

Brunch-Ready Comfort: Shoulder Pads and Sweatpants?

Sweatpants ooze weekend vibes; they’re free and comfortable with soft fabrics. What if you gave them a bit more structure? You could go out looking stylish and comfortable as well. A heavy sweater with shoulder panels is the item that makes this outfit different from anything else in your closet. With the sweater, you are cozy and comfortable—just perfect for brunch. Have the sweatpants and sweater in gray. Add a pair of brown loafers and a clutch bag to complement things. This outfit will also need a pair of sunglasses; think small frames. Hoop earrings go well with this outfit, so pick a pair that appeals to you.

Date Night Chic, Sweatpants for a Date Night

Now, we know that this is a bit of a tougher outfit to pull off, but it still is very doable. Choose a fitting pair of black, navy or charcoal sweatpants and pair this with a soft fabric. Go with chiffon in a brighter color but not too bright. You could also opt for a lace bodysuit, which would work even better. An off-shoulder blouse would also work for the date night and add a feminine touch to the whole outfit. Wear a lighter-coloured trench coat to keep the outfit flowing. Add a pair of heeled sandals, hoop earrings, and a necklace of your choice, and you will be ready for your date night.

Sunday Funday

We would rather stay indoors most of the time, but we eventually have to go out at some point. That doesn’t mean giving up your sweatpants. This outfit is a test in colour blocking, which you should excel in. The first item on this outfit is the colour-block sweatshirt, preferably a turtleneck. Add a pair of black sweats that fit well. Get a fanny pack and sunglasses to complement your outfit. Slip on comfortable footwear like slides, and you are ready for the outdoors. With this outfit, you can go wherever (whenever), so you don’t need to think too much about it or switch up too many items.

Matching Sets

We’ve talked about different ways to wear your sweatpants, but not once have a full set of joggers. Sweatpants would look great if you matched the top with the bottom. Get a pair you like and add a bucket hat to it. Make sure the bucket hat is in the colour you have on your sweatpants. Wear the look with a cotton t-shirt and stylish footwear like a pair of Gucci sneakers. Ensure you have the sleekest sunglasses on and accessories with bangles, a necklace and hoop earrings.

Sporty Spice

Sweatpants are sporty, and they could also be designed for going out with. Sweatpants and a track jacket would absolutely look good when you just need to go to the mall for some quick errands. Wear an athletic crop top to stick to the sporty theme. For some style, you could have the sweatpants in tie-and-die. Keep the colours matching as you pick the sweatpants and track jacket. Add a satin scrunchie and the look is complete. For your feet, we suggest the Nike Air Force 1s. These have managed to keep their style through the years; they should make the look pop.

Ditch the Denim

We turn to our denim pants a lot when we don’t have any official business to attend to. With these suggestions on how to wear sweatpants, you can ditch the denim from time to time and go with something more comfortable. We’ve struck a fine balance between looking trendy and too comfortable to leave the house with these outfits. You sure are going to need a lot of sweatpants to pull them off, though.
