How did you approach the development of Pain Release Joint & Arthritis Cream, and what was the inspiration behind creating a 100% natural solution for joint and muscle discomfort?
Our Research & Development Team was able to identify a significant gap in the pain & recovery market. Our community members are consistently seeking 100% natural options for everything from aches and pains to joint and arthritis relief, and to this point, there was nothing in the market that met this specific need fully.
At Saje, our inspiration always comes from our community members. When we learned that joint pain affects 1⁄3 Canadians and is the 4th leading cause of pain, we knew that there was a huge opportunity to harness the power of plants to help these people live better and more consistently pain-free lives.
When we looked at the options for topical pain relief, we discovered there was no 100% natural alternative to synthetic pain relief creams that met our high standards for efficacy and textural and aromatic elegance. Not only did these products look and feel medicinal but they had overpowering aromas, and their textures left a lot to be desired.
From there we embarked on a journey to create a cream format formulated with 100% natural ingredients, that was as effective as synthetic alternatives but that you actually want to use. We knew it needed to be lightweight, have a subtle but pleasant aroma and above all else, it needed to work. In fact it took us 4+ years of development, countless rounds of testing and numerous iterations to develop Pain Release Joint & Arthritis Cream; we wanted to get it right. Earlier this year, our 9th version became our final, the one we’re proud to offer our community today.
Can you walk us through the science behind the formula? How do the essential oils like L-menthol, Marjoram, and Copaiba work to provide effective pain relief?
This innovative cream was formulated with gentle, yet efficacious ingredients that are safe for the daily treatment of stubborn, recurrent joint pain. We wanted to create a formula that used truly functional ingredients that are well-studied for their pain relieving properties and that work synergistically to provide a lasting impact.
First and foremost, we knew using peppermint essential oil was a must. We love Peppermint at Saje – it’s the star ingredient in our infamous Peppermint Halo. This sharp and pungent essential oil contains L-menthol, which is responsible for the powerful analgesic effect (pain numbing) you get when applying Pain Release Joint & Arthritis Cream. L-menthol provides a deeply cooling and soothing sensation when applied topically that reduces the perception of pain, temporarily diverting attention away from the underlying discomfort. This fresh, green and vibrant peppermint is also primarily responsible for the product’s aroma, which so many people have celebrated! We knew it needed to represent our brand while keeping subtlety and discretion in mind for our community members.
We also turned to copaiba essential oil, which has been used by indigenous communities for centuries for its pain relieving properties. Copaiba contains high amounts of a component called beta-caryophyllene, known for its potent anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving abilities. This essential oil is mild in aroma but packs a big punch when it comes to pain relief. Copaiba is coming to us from Brazil, and has been gaining traction in the pain and recovery community in recent years as it continues to be studied for both relief and ease of physical pain, as well as its ability to support emotional calm, balance and nurturance.
Finally, we included marjoram essential oil which is both soothing and comforting to overworked muscles. The aroma of marjoram is also known to encourage feelings of safety and security which can be challenged when we’re experiencing recurrent pain.
Combined with a moisturizing and luxurious base of plant butters, oils and other functional ingredients, this formula works in synergy to soothe, ease and relieve joint pain and provide a really elevated experience without the side effects of traditional pain relievers.
How does the ergonomic design and hydrating cream base enhance the user experience, and what feedback have you received so far about these features?
We wanted to create a product that was incredibly effective but that also that felt elevated, luxurious and that our community would love using. The base of this cream is smooth, silky and highly absorbent – key for doing anything with your hands or just getting back to your busy life. In fact, our community loves the lightweight feel of this cream – they can play sports, type, cook or clean because there’s no heavy residue. Particularly when it comes to joint or arthritis pain in the hands and wrists, we needed to make sure this product was fast-absorbing, non-greasy and would sink into the skin like moisturizer. You really need to feel for yourself its lightweight and easy-glide properties.
Like all our products, we design our packaging as intentionally as our formulations. When we set out to make a product for joint pain and arthritis sufferers, we knew it needed to meet their needs by being easy to handle and open. The bottle is ergonomically designed to fit into the hand and the cap is an easy-open flip top that arthritic hands have no trouble opening or closing.
The last point is that we wanted to be mindful that for many people, pain relief creams have a harsh and abrasive aroma that can only be described as medicinal. We wanted ours to be pleasant and to represent the plant-powered nature of Saje, but in a mild and nuanced way that lets the efficacy speak for itself, with a subtle and comforting scent coming second.
