Vancouver’s reputation can be distilled down to two key things: health-consciousness, and foodie-ism. We’re passionate about clean living, but you can’t flail without hitting pork belly in this city. So what’s a food-loving health-nut to do when craving something that won’t comprise the strictest of diets, but still allows a taste of the best our city has to offer? Try one of these awesome meals we can’t believe are vegan.

Heirloom’s Buckwheat Pancake: Brunching vegans are often offered nothing more than mockery and avocado. Not so at Heirloom, where this giant, fluffy buckwheat pancake comes at you with a shotglass of maple syrup and cashew cream you’ll want to eat a whole bowl of. Ask for added banana.

exExile Bistro’s Lentil Pate: One bite of this pate and we called the server back over to double check there wasn’t meat in it. None. Since, we’ve been going back for helpings of this intensely flavourful savory spread smeared on toasties with grainy mustard and pickled vegetables.

1Bestie’s Veggie Sausage: We’re not sure how they manage to make the apple-potato based vegan sausage at Bestie so awesomely chewy, meaty and satisfying, but we’re so glad they do. One served up with curry ketchup and dark-gold fries and we’re in heaven (bonus, they serve Omission, a Portland-brewed gluten-free beer that isn’t lame!).
