The Dos + Don’ts Of Shoe Storage

October 28, 2024

Did you know that proper storage is key to keeping your heels and pumps in pristine condition. Here’s how to store them to prevent wear, dust, and damage:

1. Clean Them Before Storing

  • Wipe down your shoes with a soft, damp cloth to remove any dirt or dust.
  • For leather or suede, use appropriate cleaners and a gentle brush if needed.

2. Use Dust Bags or Shoe Covers

  • Store each shoe in a separate dust bag or cover to prevent scratches and dust buildup. Many designer shoes come with dust bags, but you can also buy them separately.

3. Insert Shoe Trees or Tissue Paper

  • Insert shoe trees to maintain the shape of the shoe, especially for leather pumps, which can lose shape over time.
  • For heels and pumps with delicate material, gently stuff the toes with tissue paper (acid-free) to help retain their shape without stretching them.

4. Organize in Clear Shoe Boxes

  • Store shoes in clear plastic boxes to protect them from dust and moisture while allowing you to see each pair easily. Stackable boxes also save space.
  • Alternatively, keep them in their original boxes, labeling the outside with a photo or description for easy identification.

5. Use a Shoe Rack or Shelf for Frequent Use Pairs

  • For shoes you wear regularly, consider storing them on a shoe rack or shelf in your closet, keeping them elevated to avoid any contact with dust on the floor.
  • Avoid overcrowding the rack to prevent scuffing or deforming.

6. Avoid Direct Sunlight and Humidity

  • Keep your heels and pumps away from direct sunlight to prevent fading and material damage.
  • Store them in a cool, dry place to avoid humidity, which can cause mold, especially on leather or suede.

7. Use Silica Gel Packs

  • Place silica gel packs inside each shoe box or storage container to control moisture and prevent mold or mildew.

8. Separate Delicate and Embellished Shoes

  • For heels with embellishments like crystals or delicate fabrics, store them individually wrapped or use padded shoe compartments to avoid any snagging or scratches.

By following these tips, your heels and pumps will stay looking fresh, organized, and ready to wear whenever you need them! —Vita Daily
