I, like every sentient Canadian within the age of majority, will be watching the election tonight (Nov. 8). And I, like many of you, have been invited to an election-watching party – to share in the collective stress and tension together, no doubt.

Here’s what I’ll be bringing in my bag to help make the experience as painless as possible. —Kelsey Klassen
1. Bourbon
As we learned in this article from VITA November, bourbon is known as ‘the American spirit’, and what better way to thank your host than with a beverage made right in the U.S.A. Bonus points: use your gift to get a drinking game started. Every time a state turns Red, take a shot. Every time a state turns Blue, take a shot. By the end, it won’t matter who won!

2. A designated driver
Be sure to ride safe tonight. We don’t want anyone getting carried away and carried off if they’re about to get on the road.

3. A blindfold
A few girls in the office were joking that they’ll be watching it through their fingertips, like a horror movie. I have vivid childhood memories of turning my hoodie around during Jurassic Park so that I could flip the fabric up every time I was scared. This is a much more elegant solution. If you’re feeling crafty, you can stitch a clever hashtag or sew the patch of your political party of choice onto the blindfold in support.

4. A nice handkerchief
No matter who wins, there will be tears. This election is one of historic importance, and has sweeping implications no matter the outcome. For many, the tears have already started with this little video.

5. An appreciation for democracy
Take stock of how you felt during the U.S. election process, and then reflect on what it means to you as a Canadian. Appreciate the differences of the people around you; and, whether you think the government represents you or not, try to ensure that you are part of making your own country a place you are proud to live.
