Travel & Culture

It’s no wonder Americans and Canadians alike love Puerto Rico. It’s easy to travel to, you’re greeted by year-round sunshine surrounded by the Caribbean Sea, and for food lovers it’s a dream come true. But Puerto Rico offers so much more than just beautiful weather and delicious food, the island is woven together in a unique blend of history, culture, and traditions that you won’t find in other Caribbean islands.

Nestled on the southern coast of Puerto Rico is Ponce—a city that is laid back, filled with rich history, and striking architecture. It is the second largest city on the island and also known as The Pearl of the South. It is a treasure trove of cultural centres, iconic landmarks and museums such as the Wedding Cake House and the Parque de Bombas, a historic firehouse turned museum.

First impressions? You’ll get a very laid back and more relaxed feel in Ponce. It’s much more quiet compared to San Juan, but the locals are just as warm and friendly. Sadly, Ponce was heavily impacted by the hurricanes in the recent years leading to many locals fleeing to other cities, but surely it is a hidden gem in the south. The community is continuing their recovery efforts on buildings to get the city back to what it was.

Ponce is a refreshing contrast from busy tourist spots, it’s where life slows down and the crowds thin out, but the charm and beauty lives on in the people and streets. You’ll find people enjoying the simplicity of life and soaking in local culture.

If you’re into sightseeing, history tours, and want to escape to a city away from the tourist crowds and immerse yourself in a more relaxed atmosphere of Puerto Rico—Ponce should be on your list. Whether you want to take a day trip only or do a few days in Ponce, save this travel guide for things to see, do, and eat in Ponce. —Farah Khan

What To Do

Copamarina Resort & Spa

You can’t go wrong with soaking in the island vibes at a classic resort. Whether you want to stay here for the day or more, Copamarina offers a blend of relaxation and luxury to kickstart your Puerto Rico trip. This is located close to Ponce, on the southwestern coast in Guánica, so you’ll get to experience a beautiful drive overlooking the Caribbean as you head from Ponce to Copamarina. With rooms overlooking the ocean, farm-to-table dining with the freshest local ingredients, access to water activities like paddle boarding and snorkeling, and a luxurious spa, Ni Spa, offering different massages and treatments, this resort offers both relaxation, indulgence, and fun.

Downtown Ponce & History Tour

There’s no better way to immerse yourself in Ponce’s rich history than by taking a tour to truly hear from locals. Sign up for the cultural walk tour with Isla Caribe that takes you through downtown Ponce, minutes from Ponce Plaza Hotel, to learn about the colonial architecture, heritage, and history that lies in every corner of Ponce. You’ll get to go inside historic landmarks like the Ponce Cathedral and the Parque de Bombas. As you walk through the city, a knowledgeable local guide will bring to life the tales of Ponce through singing, dancing, and fun storytelling. The full day tour includes the Castillo Serralles Tour, which used to be the mansion of the founder of Don Q Rum is now a museum.

Coffee Hacienda Experience with Isla Caribe

For coffee enthusiasts, a visit to a Puerto Rican coffee hacienda is like stepping into a flavourful paradise, where you can experience the island’s world-famous beans firsthand (and pack some for your trip back home *wink wink*). Coffee is a key agricultural product in Puerto Rico so visiting a plantation is a must. In fact, historically, more than half of Ponce’s land had coffee plantations and coffee farming traditions were passed down from generation to generation, but overtime that has changed with new folks passionate about keeping Puerto Rican traditions and trades alive. Surrounded by mountains of Adjuntas, a tour guide will take you to the coffee farms where you will learn and see the entire process from picking the coffee cherries on a tree to roasting, and the best part you will get a chance to sample the freshly made coffee too.
