With so many people going veg, we’ve seen a surge in soy-based imposters trying to mimic the salty, crispy goodness of bacon without much success—till now.
Mike Brennan and Garret Kruger, long-haired besties and owners of Edmonton’s uber popular vegan mobile eatery Sailin’ On first introduced their vegan bacon in the Coconut Bacon BLT Wrap (which this editor has been consuming on the steady for the last year). The wrap features the duo’s adored alterna-bacon (salty, smoky chips of organic coconut) with crunchy veggies and roasted garlic mayo in a soft flour tortilla ($8). The sweet-tasting, slow-baked coconut tastes like a savoury bacon candy bathed in a secret, smoky seasoning. Now, Sailin’ On is bagging up its niche product and selling it in stores around the city.
