There’s something about fall that makes us want to hit reset. As the weather cools, the colours deepen, and the layers return, closets often become a jumbled mix of summer leftovers and hidden cold-weather gems. The change of season is the perfect time to get organized and create a space that works for both your lifestyle and your wardrobe. And the good news? A fall closet refresh doesn’t have to take all day. With a few intentional steps, you can bring calm to your mornings and clarity to your style.
Here are six foolproof tips I use every year to help clients reset their closets for fall:
1. Do a seasonal sweep.
Start by removing everything summer-related. Ask yourself: Did I wear this? Do I love this? If the answer is no, donate or sell it. Pack the rest into clearly labeled bins or vacuum-sealed bags and store them on a high shelf or under the bed.
2. Bring fall to the front.
Move your fall staples into prime view—boots, blazers, knits, jeans. This is also the time to pull out your trench, wool coat, or puffer, and pack away summer jackets. Check if anything needs dry cleaning or replacing. And if you can, treat yourself to one fall wardrobe refresh—a cozy shacket, a bold knit, or weatherproof boots. You’ll thank yourself on those crisp morning walks.
3. Use matching hangers.
Uniform hangers instantly elevate your space. Slim velvet ones are my go-to since they maximize space and keep slinky fabrics (like silk) from sliding to the floor. Recycle any clunky plastic hangers and return or toss the wire ones from the dry cleaner.
4. Create a “maybe” zone.
If you’re unsure about an item, pop it into a “maybe” bin and revisit in a few weeks. If you haven’t missed it, it’s probably time to let it go. With the holiday season approaching, many clothing drives will happily welcome those “maybe” pieces.
5. Rotate your shoes.
Boots are back, especially here in Canada. Store sandals and summer shoes in labeled bins, and keep everyday boots or sneakers by the entrance or in a clear shoe rack. A waterproof spray and boot shapers will keep them looking their best all season.
6. Add cozy Canadian touches.
Think baskets for scarves, hooks for hats, or even a drawer dedicated to toques and fingerless gloves. Add a cedar block to keep things fresh. Suddenly, your closet will feel like your own personal boutique.
