Sun Peaks In 48 Hours: Chairlifts, Local Jam & Mountain Air

There’s city life, and then there’s the small, sun-touched world of Sun Peaks—a place that feels like a European mountain village tucked into the heart of British Columbia. Escape for a breezy overnight and come back feeling reset: two days of lift-views, backyard-market charm and surprisingly good eats.

The drive up is the kind every short-trip itinerary should include: a dip option at Heffley Lake if you’re feeling spontaneous, and a mandatory stop at Honey Berry Farm Market for jars of house-made haskap berry jam and honey. It’s the sort of regional detour that turns a drive into the start of the trip.

Check into Sun Peaks Lodge—a family-run spot planted right in the village—where Bavarian charm convenience meets cozy rooms (some with jacuzzis by the bed!). From the lobby it’s a five-minute stroll to the Sunburst Express, the resort chairlift that gives you instant alpine perspective (pro tip: ride up at dusk—the light over the peaks is something else).

Evening in the village is low-key magic. Street-level patios fill with conversation and the scent of wood-fired pizza; choose between Morrisey’s Public House and Powder Hounds for dinner and wander over to the Upper Village Stage for, potentially, live music (i.e., instant mood lifter).

Morning brings one of the trip’s best surprises: breakfast at Vertical Café in Sundance Lodge. Think organic Cherry Hill coffee, fresh-baked pastries and avocado croast (croissant-toast) that powers you for a morning of walking or an easy bike ride. Indeed, Sun Peaks is as much a summer destination as it is a winter one, with mountain biking, hiking and an 18-hole Graham Cooke golf course tucked into the foothills.

One quiet note that made us appreciate the place even more: Sun Peaks is recognized for serious environmental stewardship—it was the first resort in North America to earn ISO 14001 for environmental management—so your outdoor pleasures come with thoughtful conservation in the background.

Two days is enough for a reset: good food, crisp air and enough mountain views to leave you scheming for a longer return. Pack a swimsuit (there’s a sauna, steam room and hot tub in the basement of the lodge) and leave some room in the car for jam. Sun Peaks makes a short trip feel like a proper getaway. —Vita Daily
