Candy, Community & Calm: The New Way To Plan Halloween

Halloween is back on the neighbourhood calendar—and thanks to a little digital help, it can feel safer and more magical than ever. Nextdoor Canada’s Treat Map returns this year to help parents plan trick-or-treat routes, find allergy-friendly homes, and spot community-hosted “safe zones” so kids can gobble candy without the stress.

A new Nextdoor/Angus Reid survey shows why tools like this matter: 63% of Canadians say road safety is their top Halloween worry, and 36–47% are concerned about safety around other people. Those stats have parents thinking twice about late-night walks and busy streets—but they’re also reviving the fun. “The Treat Map is about more than finding candy—it’s also about giving families peace of mind,” says Kelsey Grady, Nextdoor’s Chief Global Communications Officer. “Halloween should be safe, fun, and easy to plan.”

How Treat Map actually helps

Think of Treat Map as a neighbourhood cheat sheet for spooky season. Users place pins to show whether they’re handing out treats or hosting decorations, add photos and notes (king-size bars, allergy-friendly options, or pumpkins and mazes), and help families map out lively, well-lit routes. Kelsey recommends three features parents should use first: look for homes marked “giving out treats,” spot community events or designated safe zones, and check Nextdoor’s Alerts map for real-time updates on traffic, closures, or hazards.

That Alerts map makes a real difference. “On Halloween night, families can use Treat Map to identify streets with high concentrations of trick-or-treaters—these streets tend to be busier with foot traffic and, therefore, safer,” Kelsey explains. Paired with Alerts, parents can avoid traffic hotspots or sudden road issues and plan routes that keep kids away from danger.

Inclusion matters—yes, even for candy

One of Treat Map’s most useful features is its notes field: neighbours can list whether they’re handing out allergy-safe treats or gluten- and peanut-free options. Kelsey says community norms drive this—when one house lists allergy-friendly candy, others often follow. That transparency helps families with dietary restrictions feel included and reduces the risks that can come with trick-or-treating.

Privacy you can trust

Wary of oversharing? Nextdoor keeps Treat Map pins local and anonymous—no exact addresses are shown, only community-level pins visible to verified neighbours. “Privacy and safety are top priorities for Nextdoor,” Kelsey stresses. Users remain in control of what they share, and participation is optional.

Not everyone uses apps—and that’s OK

If your block isn’t digital, you can still get the Treat Map effect the old-fashioned way—coordinate with school parents, set up a condo lobby hub, or organize a parking-lot trick-or-treat. “The goal of Treat Map isn’t just digital—it’s about fostering community connection,” Kelsey says.

Want to try it? The Treat Map runs through October 31—find it at nextdoor.ca/treat_map. Whether you’re hunting for the best pillow-sized sweets or planning a cozy, well-lit route for littles, a little neighbourly planning goes a long way—this Halloween, the community is the best costume accessory. —Noa Nichol
