Hockey, heart and a slice of pizza—what’s not to love? Dr. Oetker’s Giuseppe Practice with a Pro is back for year four, inviting minor hockey teams across Canada to show how they give back off the ice for a shot at training with Hockey Hall of Famer Jarome Iginla and a trip to the 2026 Memorial Cup. In this Q&A, Jarome talks teamwork, mentorship, community spirit—and why small acts of kindness make the biggest plays. —Noa Nichol
What’s the single most unforgettable “team moment” you’ve seen from a Practice with a Pro winner — something that made you laugh, cry, or both?
There have been a few unforgettable moments, and every event has been a lot of fun, but the one that stands out the most was with the team from Dalmeny, Saskatchewan. They had set up a drill for every player to run through based on the famous Crosby pass from the 2010 Olympic gold medal goal. Each player had to yell “Iggy!” before getting the pass and taking the shot, just like Crosby did. I thought that was pretty cool—it brought back some great memories.
Giuseppe celebrates such moments of passion that defines Canadian hockey — where energy, teamwork and fun bring people and communities together.
If teams want to make a standout contest video, what three things should they absolutely show us (and what should they definitely skip)?
It’s always great to see your enthusiasm, team spirit, and what your community means to you. I love running energetic, fun practices, so make sure that energy shines through in your video!
You’re the ultimate pro—what’s one on-ice drill and one off-ice lesson you always teach young players that’s about more than skill (teamwork, leadership, kindness)?
On the ice, I think the most important quality is the drive to compete. Stick skills, skating and practice play a significant role, but when the game starts, it’s all about competing at the highest level. There’s only one puck out there, and you have to battle for it. The players and teams that embrace that and learn to love the competition usually find the most success.
Off the ice, I always come back to a simple lesson: treat others the way you want to be treated. It’s something that goes far beyond hockey, but it’s just as important in the game as it is in life.
Pizza’s part of the program—what’s your go-to Giuseppe order to celebrate a win, and do you have any gameday rituals that involve food, music or team cheers?
I’m a big fan of the Giuseppe Thin Crust Deluxe. When I was younger, I usually stuck with straight cheese or pepperoni. Celebrating a great team effort with a slice of pizza is a special Canadian hockey tradition. I’ve always loved how it brings everyone together, whether you’re just off the ice or watching a big game at home.
Giuseppe pizza really is the perfect addition to every hockey night, with the authentic taste and aroma of your favourite pizzeria straight to your home.
If you could design one “Practice with a Pro” challenge that tests grit and goodwill (think: relay + community service twist
That’s a great question. There have been so many creative ideas over the years, but for me, the most meaningful ones are always about giving back. I believe that the most important thing is how you can have a positive impact on people and your community. That is the goal, and it’s been awesome to see so many teams do wonderful things in their communities across Canada.
It’s also exciting that as part of this year’s program, one deserving team will earn the once-in-a-lifetime chance to join me in my home community of Kelowna B.C, for a VIP experience at the 2026 Memorial Cup; a celebration of heart, teamwork and Canadian hockey culture.
