For the girl who has everything, there’s a solar-powered doll of the queen.
You see it in retro-style cafes—the Pee-wee Herman dolls, Coca-Cola signs and posters of Marilyn Monroe. Americana kitsch they call it, and it’s sort of nostalgic and wonderful and a little more immediately recognizable than its Canadian counterpart. So it’s nice to see something that has a sense of humour both cheeky and nationally relevant—like this Kikkerland Solar Queen ($20)—a tiny, tirelessly waving statuette of HRH herself.
This Canada Day, make a funny little nod to our country’s royalist roots. Actually, make a funny little wave. —Adrienne Matei
