From the diving board to the drag stage, Vancouver’s own Hazel is ready to make waves on Canada’s Drag Race Season 6. A former elite-level diver turned dynamic performer, Hazel brings her trademark mix of sweetness, wit, and athletic precision to the competition. Known for her weekly Vancouver show HAZE and performances alongside icons like Trixie Mattel, she’s no stranger to the spotlight—just a new kind of runway. We caught up with Hazel to talk competition mindset, finding confidence through drag, and what it takes to serve Olympic-level realness under the big top. —Noa Nichol
First things first—congrats on Canada’s Drag Race! What was the very first thought that ran through your mind when you sashayed into the Werk Room?
Honestly, my very first thought was: ‘Do. Not. Trip.’ Walking into that Werk Room was surreal—suddenly you’re facing this wall of cameras, lights, and people you’re meeting for the very first time. I’ve always wondered what the girls see when they walk in, and experiencing it myself was both electrifying and a little overwhelming. On the outside I was serving, but inside I was fully screaming, just trying not to look completely unhinged..
Vancouver queens are known for their creativity and edge—how would you describe your signature drag style, and what West Coast flair are you bringing to the competition?
Vancouver truly has some of the best drag in the entire country. Being surrounded by such wildly talented kings, queens, and things has pushed me to level up constantly—it’s a city that keeps you hungry and inspired. My signature drag style is all about performance. The moment my foot hits the stage, I want every eye in the room locked on me until my very last step off. With my background as a national-level diver, I blend athleticism with artistry—whether it’s a split, a flip, or a dip, I’m bringing heat, precision, and full West Coast electricity to that stage. That’s the Vancouver flair I’m representing.
Without giving too much away (no spoilers!), what can fans expect from this new season—more drama, more glamour, or maybe a little of both?
This season is truly the best one yet. You’ve got incredible performers representing provinces across the country, all coming in not just to compete—but to fight for that crown. The talent, the heart, the moments… it’s next level. Even Trevor Boris, the executive producer, said this was his favorite season so far. So yes—expect drama, expect glamour, and expect a whole lot of unforgettable television
You’re repping Vancouver alongside PM For A Good Time—what’s it like having a fellow hometown queen by your side, and how do you two embody the city’s drag scene?
Having PM there wasn’t just having another performer—it was having my best friend by my side. We run a monthly show together called Dive Bar at The Junction, and it’s always packed with insane lip-syncs, comedy, and pure chaos in the best way. Our drag is so different, which is why we complement each other. I’m hyper-feminine—I love beauty, polish, and grace. PM, on the other hand, is alternative, alien, gender-bending, and constantly redefining what drag can be. Some days they’re outside the box, some days they are the box, and that’s exactly why I adore them. Together, we really represent the range and creativity that makes Vancouver’s drag scene so iconic.
Every queen has her secret weapon—what’s yours? Is it a look, a lip-sync, or maybe that “don’t-mess-with-me” energy?
My secret weapon is my performance style. I’m incredibly confident in my lip-syncing because it’s not just about stunts—it’s about connection. I want the judges and the audience to feel every word. When I’m on that stage, I’m giving all I got.
The Vancouver drag scene has exploded over the past few years. What do you think makes it so unique compared to other cities in Canada?
Vancouver’s drag scene is on fire right now. The talent here is unbelievable, and everyone pushes each other to keep elevating. When you go see a show downtown, you’re guaranteed to see polished, curated numbers because performers here put heart and artistry into what they bring to the stage. Those wallets will be empty by the end of a show and your jaw will need to be picked up off the floor!
If you could describe your journey on Drag Race as a beauty product, what would it be—and why? (Think bold, high-impact, and totally you!)
The Long-Wear, High-Shine Setting Spray: Because nothing could smudge my determination. I walked in polished, powered through challenges, and locked in my legacy with a finish that stayed flawless no matter the pressure.
The viewing party is coming up on November 20—what’s the vibe? Should fans come ready to serve looks, spill tea, or both?
The vibe of the viewing party is welcome to the circus. We are there to celebrate PM and I’s journey to the first episode. There will be performances at the start by yours truly, PM, Rose butch and Batty Banks! Top tier talent about to tear cleerbirties stage up, and then we will be spilling all the tea while the episode is on!
