5 Reasons To Support A Local Nonprofit This Giving Season

December 1, 2025

The holidays are a natural season for generosity, reflection, and community connection and this year the need is especially urgent. “A lot of nonprofits have had a tough year,” shares Amanda Sayfy, Executive Director of Dress for Success Vancouver. “Many charities and nonprofits rely on end-of-year giving campaigns to plan for the year ahead. Funding and grants are becoming harder to secure, while the demand from clients and the needs of our community continue to grow.”

Dress for Success is just one of the many nonprofit organisations doing incredibly important work. At Dress for Success Vancouver, they empower women and gender-diverse individuals into financial independence through meaningful employment. What began in 1999 as a group of volunteers offering professional outfits has since grown into a full offering of funded programs, from pre-employment coaching and Dressing Services to career development, mentorship, and leadership training. Over 46,000 clients across Vancouver’s Lower Mainland have been supported, each contributing to a growing community of confidence, opportunity, and long-term community impact.

Giving Feels Good

Acts of generosity don’t just help others, they help you. Research shows that giving activates the brain’s pleasure centres, creating a genuine warm glow. Supporting a cause you care about can increase happiness, purpose, and life satisfaction. It’s a simple act that lifts everyone involved.

Strengthen the Local Economy

When you support a local organization, your impact stays close to home. Dress for Success Vancouver clients who gain employment contribute to the local workforce, support local businesses, and strengthen community infrastructure.

In fact, the organization estimates $2.4 billion in collective economic impact from clients who have secured employment in its history. Your donation fuels real economic momentum.

Tax Season Is Coming

In addition to the good feelings, there’s a practical reason to give. Charitable donations come with tax benefits. Making your gift before year-end means you can claim it on your upcoming return. It’s a meaningful way to align your financial planning with your community values.

Start a Legacy of Giving

Giving is an opportunity to bring others into the process. When families donate together, they model empathy, gratitude, and civic engagement. You’re not just giving money and funding programs. You’re passing on values that shape future generations. Regular monthly donations build relationships with nonprofits and are valuable beyond dollars, giving them sustainable funding to plan ahead.

Create a Ripple Effect

Every donation, big or small, touches more than one life. At Dress for Success Vancouver, one client’s success supports a family, inspires peers, strengthens workplaces, and enriches communities. When one woman succeeds, she inspires others to grow with her and your contribution sets that ripple in motion.

This giving season, consider supporting a local nonprofit doing meaningful, measurable work. Because when you give back, your community feels it, immediately and for years to come.
