From the local restaurateurs that brought us El Cortez, comes the tasty, cheeky, loud and boozy Have Mercy. Edmonton doesn’t exactly boast an abundance of southern kitchens so we were excited to see what the new kid on the block had to offer.
Much like it’s older sibling El Cortez, the décor at Have Mercy strikes you first. Vintage Marlboro ads adorning the raw brick walls and neon signs serving as the main source of light. Stand at the bar and the feature neon will inform you, “If you don’t gamble, you’ll never win.”
Once you’ve totally forgotten you’re actually in Edmonton, start deciding on a cocktail. Which is no easy feat given the delicious selections presented. We recommend starting with an Always a pleasure, Leroy. Bourbon with smoked lemon juice and mint. How could you go wrong? Now you’re ready for food. You’ve got all the southern table favourites to choose from. Fried chicken, hushpuppies, mac ‘n’ cheese but we couldn’t go past the shrimp ‘n’ grits. Oh so creamy grits topped with Andouille sausage and succulent shrimp. You’d also do well to start of your feast with the hot tamales. Braised pork and cornmeal inside a corn husk is always called for! And there’s live music every day of the week to complete the atmosphere.
Everyone in favour, say I! —Amy Dillon
