King Living’s Most Radical Sofa Yet Is The One That Arrives In A Box

Décor & Design

For decades, King Living has been synonymous with big, beautiful, forever sofas—the kind you invest in once and build a life around. But with the launch of KING FreeForm, the Australian design powerhouse is doing something quietly radical: compressing five decades of comfort engineering into sofas that arrive in boxes, assemble in minutes, and start at just $499.

Yes, really.

Designed for renters, first-time buyers, and anyone whose life doesn’t come with a “forever floor plan,” FreeForm marks a new era for King Living—one that prioritizes speed, flexibility, and sustainability without sacrificing the comfort and longevity the brand is known for.

“For King Living to design something that arrives in a box and assembles in minutes is a real disruptor,” says Chris Cooke, Head of Design at King Living. “But it also opened up an entirely new opportunity to apply our decades of comfort engineering expertise in a different way.”

A Return to Foam—With a Future-Facing Twist

While FreeForm feels new, its roots run deep. King Living was founded in 1977 by David King and his mother, Gwen, and the brand’s earliest designs were crafted entirely from foam—long before steel frames became the norm.

“There was a strong sense of coming full circle,” Chris explains. “Our founder’s earliest designs were pure foam, but nostalgia alone isn’t enough. FreeForm reinterprets that philosophy for lives that are fluid rather than fixed.”

Unlike traditional King Living sofas built on steel frames, FreeForm is entirely frame-free, engineered to compress for delivery and rebound instantly once unboxed—without compromising structure or support.

“People often confuse compression with quality loss,” Chris says. “Compression is just a temporary state. What matters is how the material behaves before and after—and that’s where our engineering comes in.”

Comfort That Moves With You

At the heart of FreeForm is King Rebound Technology, a comfort system that fuses ultra-resilient, high-rebound foam with responsive springs designed to compress evenly and recover completely.

“We think about sofas the way you’d think about a body in motion,” Chris says. “Comfort should respond to you, not resist you.”

Paired with stretch-and-recover fabrics and backed by a 10-year warranty, FreeForm is designed to look—and feel—the same after years of sitting, moving, and living.

Designed Like Performance Footwear

One of FreeForm’s most unexpected design details is its base, inspired by performance sports footwear. Crafted from 50 per cent post-industrial recycled HDPE, the ridged sole-like structure grips uneven floors, reduces noise, improves airflow, and creates a subtle architectural lift.

“A well-designed sole adapts without calling attention to itself,” says Chris. “That’s exactly what we wanted the base to do—self-level, protect floors, and stay quiet while doing its job.”

Modular, Sustainable, and Ready Tomorrow

The debut FreeForm collection includes four designs—the sculptural Quantum Sofa, minimalist KING Kube Sofa, and two multifunctional sofa beds—each modular, adaptable, and designed to evolve with changing spaces.

Sustainability is woven throughout: removable, machine-washable covers; upcycled foam offcuts used as cushion fill; compact delivery that reduces packaging waste; and fewer trucks on the road thanks to compression.

“The biggest sustainability win is reducing volume,” Chris notes. “It changes the entire footprint of the product—from delivery to emissions to handling.”

With next-day metro delivery, tool-free assembly, a 120-day home trial, and prices that open the door to a new generation, FreeForm lowers the barrier to King Living without lowering the bar.

“It doesn’t feel risky,” he says of the more accessible price point. “It feels inevitable. FreeForm lets people experience King Living earlier in their lives—and grow with it.”

In a world where speed, sustainability, and comfort are often positioned as trade-offs, FreeForm quietly proves they don’t have to be. —Noa Nichol
