A Staycation @ The Fairmont Royal York: Food & Fashion Without Leaving Toronto

Toronto’s energy is magnetic year-round, and one of the great privileges of living here is being able to dip in and out of its vibrant neighbourhoods whenever inspiration strikes. This time, that inspiration was equal parts necessity and a desire to feed the travel bug. With a toddler who no longer flies “gratis” on my lap—and a wish to indulge locally—a staycation felt like the perfect solution.

With my husband still committed to his swimming era and our itinerary anchored to the east side of the city, our parameters were set. Enter The Fairmont Royal York, our choice for a true city escape. Elegant, social, and absolutely luxurious, Toronto’s storied landmark delivered the feeling of travel without the logistics. Steeped in history and perfectly positioned, its central location made shopping, sipping, and strolling entirely effortless—while the pool, sauna, and gym made it hard to even leave the hotel at all.

From a chic dinner at REIGN and champagne bubbles beneath the grand lobby clock to browsing top local boutiques, here’s how we spent 48 stylish hours at Toronto’s most iconic address. —Lauren Walker-Lee

Eat + Drink

They say it’s easy to eat your way through Toronto—and they’d be right. There’s cuisine for every mood, moment, and craving imaginable. Keeping things to the central and east ends of the city, there was no shortage of café and restaurant gems to choose from (though narrowing it down wasn’t easy).

The Morning Caffeine Fix: Balzac’s Coffee Roasters: No staycation is complete without a slow morning coffee at Balzac’s in the Distillery District. This Toronto mainstay is housed in an 1895 pump house, complete with exposed brick walls, a wooden staircase, and a grand chandelier. Starting the day here sets the tone for wandering the cobblestone streets of the historic neighbourhood—transportive, even while staying local.

Neighbourhood Charm: The Wood Owl: A favourite among IYKYK food lovers, this Danforth gem feels like a local secret brought to life. An unpretentious neighbourhood spot, The Wood Owl offers a tight menu of beautifully executed dishes like seared trout and hand-cut tagliatelle with ’nduja and crab. Often considered more of a wine bar (try the Chablis), the inviting dining room comes from the team behind The Wren, delivering an elevated yet easygoing vibe rooted in locally sourced ingredients and inspirations ranging from French to South American.

Drinks + Dinner Duo: CLOCKWORK & REIGN: As a lobby bar enthusiast, The Fairmont holds a special place in my heart—I met my husband at the lobby bar at Fairmont Chateau Whistler. Naturally, we kicked off the evening at CLOCKWORK Champagne & Cocktails, beneath the legendary clock and surrounded by the unmistakable buzz only a grand hotel can offer. Expect expertly crafted cocktails, and if you’re feeling indulgent, the epic seafood tower is best enjoyed with something sparkling.

From there, we moved on to REIGN, the hotel’s refined restaurant inspired by Canada’s diverse landscapes. The menu is crafted in partnership with local farmers and sustainable producers, resulting in dishes that feel both elevated and grounded.

Boutique Browsing: East Toronto Style

Toronto’s local shopping scene deserves time—and attention. These three boutiques, each a beacon of thoughtful design and neighbourhood charm, make for the perfect Queen Street East trifecta.

Good Neighbour: True to its name, Good Neighbour is a welcoming, style-savvy emporium for fashion and home. With three locations, they’ve become a go-to for many Torontonians. Expect brands like DL1961, Clare V., Jenny Bird, and Ganni, alongside an apothecary and home section that encourages lingering. Don’t leave without checking out Ember Wellness face oils and &K Amsterdam wine glasses.

Health Hut: No east-side shopping day is complete without a stop at cult favourite Health Hut. Thoughtfully sourcing natural beauty products since 2011, this clean beauty destination boasts three locations and a devoted following. With a strong commitment to ingredient integrity, they carry brands like Vintner’s Daughter, Rahua, and Susanne Kaufmann, alongside their own line and Canadian favourites including The Cure, Skincare Guests on Earth, and Graydon Skincare. Health Hut champions an inclusive ethos: “more joy, less perfection, more curiosity, less judgment.”

Province of Canada: Celebrated for timeless pieces rooted in Canadian comfort and design, Province of Canada embodies locally made slow fashion with a laid-back sensibility. Styles often sell out quickly, so act fast when restocks drop. Known for cheeky slogans like “Montreal Bagels Are Better Than New York’s” and “Basketball Is Canadian,” this is the kind of brand your closet will thank you for. Pick up a coordinated sweatsuit—and don’t forget the matching hat.
