The Case For Oil-Only Beauty (And Why Less Really Is More)

In a skincare landscape crowded with multi-step routines and ingredient overload, Canadian Grace is taking a radically simple approach—oil only. Founded on the belief that skin thrives when supported, not stripped, the Canadian-made brand is redefining what effective skincare can look like by removing water, fillers, and synthetics entirely.

We sat down with Canadian Grace founder Shahnawaz Sheikh to talk about the science behind oil-only beauty, why well-formulated oils are misunderstood, and how simplifying your routine can actually deliver better, long-term results for skin, hair, and scalp. —Noa Nichol

Canadian Grace is built on an oil-only philosophy. What made you confident that skincare could be effective—if not more effective—without water, fillers, or synthetics?

We kept coming back to one simple truth: oils have been used for centuries because they work, and the skin’s barrier is naturally lipid-based. Our confidence came from both research and real-world results: when you choose the right oils, you’re working with skin, not against it. Water-based skincare can absolutely be effective, but many formulas are designed around water as a base because it helps create a light texture and allows for a certain type of product experience. We chose a different approach. By removing the water phase, we can keep formulas focused, concentrated, and intentionally simple. Whether it’s our Organic Jojoba Oil for everyday balance or our Rosehip Oil for a more nourished, healthy-looking glow, the philosophy stays the same: pure, functional ingredients with nothing extra.

Many people still associate oils with heaviness or breakouts. How do you help customers understand the difference between poorly formulated oils and high-performance, skin-compatible ones?

Most “oils” people have tried are either overly heavy, poorly balanced, or not suited to their skin type and routine. We help customers understand that not all oils behave the same. Absorption rate, fatty acid profile, and overall balance matter. A high-performance oil should feel breathable, cushiony, and comforting, not greasy. For example, jojoba is often loved because it feels lightweight and skin-compatible, while rosehip is valued for how it supports a softer, more even-looking complexion. We also teach simple usage cues: start with a few drops, apply on slightly damp skin, and let the oil do the work. When customers experience the right oil in the right way, the perception shifts quickly.

From a formulation standpoint, what advantages do oil-only products have when it comes to skin barrier health and long-term results?

Oil-only formulas can be uniquely supportive of the skin barrier because they work with the skin’s natural lipid structure. They help reduce the feeling of dryness, tightness, and sensitivity by reinforcing what the skin is already made of. Another advantage is focus and concentration. When a formula is not built around a water base, you can keep the ingredient list intentionally minimal and centered on performance-driven oils that deliver comfort, softness, and glow. Many customers notice this with oils like our Organic Argan Oil, which is deeply nourishing yet can still feel elegant on the skin. Long-term, we see oils as a compounding strategy: consistent barrier support can improve how skin looks, feels, and responds to the environment over time.

Minimalist routines are gaining traction. For someone overwhelmed by multi-step regimens, how does an oil-only approach simplify skincare without sacrificing efficacy?

Oil-only skincare is the ultimate reset. Instead of layering five to ten steps, you can cleanse, apply an oil, and be done. That simplicity does not reduce efficacy, it often improves it because people actually stay consistent. Oils can support the barrier, soften the look of dryness, and enhance glow in one step. For someone overwhelmed, we often suggest starting with one hero product, like our Organic Jojoba Oil as a daily essential, and building from there only if needed.

How do your products support different skin types—especially acne-prone, sensitive, or aging skin—using a single-category format like oils?

Different skin types do not need more products, they need the right ingredients. Oils can be selected based on their fatty acid profiles and naturally occurring compounds that support different needs. For acne-prone skin, the goal is balance and barrier support, not stripping. For sensitive skin, it is calm, comfort, and simplicity. For aging skin, it is nourishment and a healthier-looking barrier that helps skin look smoother and more resilient. In our line, someone might gravitate toward Organic Jojoba Oil for balance, Rosehip Oil for a more radiant look, or Vitamin E Radiance Oil when they want a richer, more cushioned feel. The goal is still minimalist: one great oil, used consistently.

Scalp and hair oils are often overlooked in skincare conversations. Why is scalp health such a critical extension of skin health in your view?

Your scalp is skin. It has follicles, oil glands, and a barrier just like your face. When scalp health is supported, hair tends to look and feel healthier because it’s growing in a better environment. We see scalp care as skincare. A consistent oil ritual can help support comfort, reduce the look of dryness, and promote a healthier-feeling scalp. That’s exactly why we created our Rosemary + Castor Hair Oil, which fits into a simple routine that customers actually maintain. Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp.

As founders, how involved are you in ingredient sourcing and formulation decisions, and what standards must an ingredient meet before it earns a place in a Canadian Grace product?

We are deeply involved. Canadian Grace is founder-led in the truest sense. We personally review sourcing, quality, and formulation decisions because the brand is built on trust. An ingredient must meet high standards for purity, traceability, and performance. We look at origin integrity, processing method, and whether it aligns with our Oil Only Beauty promise. Our Batana Oil is a great example: it’s rare, highly sought-after, and sourced directly from the Miskito region of Honduras. Our Argan Oil is sourced from Morocco’s protected biosphere reserves. Those origin stories matter because they reflect the integrity behind the ingredient, not just the label.

Being made and bottled in Canada is a core part of your brand identity. How does local production influence quality control and transparency for consumers?

Local production gives us control, and control creates trust. Bottling in Canada allows tighter quality oversight, better handling of freshness, and more transparency in how products are finished and packaged. It also reflects what we stand for: a proudly Canadian brand that brings the world’s finest origin oils together, then bottles them here with care and accountability. Consumers increasingly want to know not just what is in a product, but where it came from and how it was handled. Local production helps us answer those questions clearly.

What are the most common misconceptions customers have before trying oil-only skincare—and what feedback do you hear once they’ve committed to the routine?

The biggest misconception is that oils automatically mean greasy skin or breakouts. The second is that oils cannot be part of a complete routine. Once customers commit, we often hear the opposite: their skin feels calmer, more comfortable, and more balanced, with fewer swings between dryness and irritation. Many say their routine feels easier and their skin looks healthier because they stopped overcorrecting with too many products. We hear this often from customers who start with something simple like Jojoba or Rosehip and then realize they do not need a complicated shelf to see real results.

Looking ahead, how do you see oil-only beauty evolving within the broader clean and minimalist skincare movement?

We believe oil-only beauty is not a trend, it’s a return to fundamentals, updated for modern standards. Clean and minimalist skincare is moving toward fewer ingredients, better sourcing, and formulas that respect the skin barrier. Oil-only fits naturally into that shift because it simplifies routines while staying results-driven. What’s especially exciting is that oils are no longer seen as a niche step. Across the industry, including larger established brands, we’re seeing more oils added to core skincare collections as consumer education grows and people experience how effective well-formulated oils can be. We see the future as fewer products, higher quality, and more transparency, and oils will be a central part of that.
