Inside The Olympic Village Kitchen: Fun Food Facts About Milano Cortina 2026

Dining & Wine

The world’s top winter athletes have officially landed in Italy, and while we’re all watching the podiums, the real action is happening in the dining halls. Forget standard cafeteria food; Milano Cortina 2026 is leaning into the host country’s culinary heritage to fuel over 3,500 athletes from 93 nations.

Here is a look at the “fun” math behind the meals, beds, and the one dessert everyone is talking about.

Fueling the Games

Managing nutrition for elite athletes across different mountain clusters is a massive operation. To keep everyone at peak performance, the villages offer 24-hour canteens and menus tailored to 93 diverse cultures.

  • Meal Count: The main dining hall in Milan serves up to 4,500 meals per day, while Cortina serves 4,000 and Predazzo prepares 2,300.
  • Total Volume: More than 3 million meals will be prepared in total, covering everyone from athletes and media to the Olympic family and spectators.
  • A “Tower” of Trays: If you stacked a tray for every meal served at this year’s Games, the tower would reach 60 km high.
  • The Daily Prep: Kitchen staff and volunteers crack through 10,000 eggs and cook approximately 450 kilograms of pasta every single day.
  • Six Specialized Stations: Athletes can choose from dedicated stations for carbs (featuring authentic pizza and pasta), proteins, vegetarian options, fruit, desserts, and international cuisine.

Home Away from Home

The Milan Athletes Village has transformed a former industrial site into a high-tech residential hub for 1,559 residents.

  • The Infrastructure: Milan offers 1,154 rooms and 1,700 beds spread across six new residential buildings.
  • Bye-Bye Cardboard: Unlike previous Games, athletes are resting on sturdy wooden frames and actual mattresses this year—no cardboard beds in sight.
  • The Support Team: It takes 100 staff members and 208 volunteers to keep village life running smoothly behind the scenes.

The “Viral” One to Watch

Move over chocolate muffins; there is a new star in town. Team Canada speedskaters Courtney Sarault and Ivanie Blondin have already spotted the predicted viral dessert of 2026.

Keep an eye out for the “tortino al cioccolato” (or tortino cuore fondente). It’s a decadent molten chocolate cake available right at breakfast—because when you’re an Olympian, dessert for breakfast is just high-performance fuel.

Since we’re channeling that Milano Cortina 2026 energy, here is a recipe for the “Tortino al Cioccolato” (Molten Chocolate Cake). This Italian-style lava cake is rich, decadent, and surprisingly simple to whip up at home.

The “Olympic Tortino” (Molten Chocolate Cake)

Yields: 4 individual cakes

Ingredients:

  • 100g high-quality dark chocolate (60–70% cocoa), chopped
  • 80g unsalted butter, plus extra for greasing
  • 2 large eggs, at room temperature
  • 40g granulated sugar
  • 30g all-purpose flour, sifted
  • A pinch of sea salt
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder (for dusting the molds)

Instructions:

  1. Prep the Molds: Generously grease four individual ramekins or aluminum foil cups with butter. Dust the insides with cocoa powder, tapping out any excess. This ensures your “tortino” slides out perfectly.
  2. Melt the Base: Using a double boiler (or a microwave in 30-second bursts), melt the chopped chocolate and butter together until smooth. Let it cool slightly.
  3. Whip the Eggs: In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs and sugar together until the mixture is pale and slightly frothy.
  4. Combine: Gently fold the melted chocolate mixture into the eggs. Once combined, sift in the flour and salt, folding carefully so you don’t lose the air in the batter.
  5. The Chill Factor: For the best molten center, let the batter rest in the ramekins for at least 30 minutes (or up to 4 hours in the fridge).
  6. Bake: Preheat your oven to 390°F (200°C). Bake for 10–12 minutes. The edges should be firm and set, but the center should still look soft and slightly jiggly.
  7. The Reveal: Let them sit for one minute, then carefully run a knife around the edge and invert onto a plate.

Serve immediately while the “cuore fondente” (melting heart) is still warm.
