You’ve seen the construction paper on the windows all summer. Now patrons can peek inside the newly opened Strathcona Beer Company at Hastings and Campbell to see what Vancouver’s newest craft brewery is pouring.
The official grand opening of the gritty, concrete and neon 12,000-sq.ft. space—a fresh take on the tasting room look du jour—isn’t until September, but the brewery is throwing open its doors today, July 15, for its soft launch.
Customers can taste samplings of the first beers on tap (classic international styles like Pilsner, Belgian Golden Ale and British IPA), top up their growlers at the in-house filling station, shop the retail area (brewery president Tim Knight previously owned the Vancouver chapter of Alife streetwear) and nosh on slices from the brewery’s “gourmet pizza kitchen”.
Capped off by an iconic red neon sign (a nod to Hastings Street’s brightly lit past), the brewery captures a cross-section of Strathcona’s diversity while bringing new energy to the bustling industrial corridor. And as Vancouver’s oldest neighbourhood, we’ve gotta say: it’s nice to see its name up in lights. —Kelsey Klassen
