Rare Affair

August 12, 2009

With a curious eye on the huge space on Mainland and Nelson, we headed
to the new Keg for a
peek at a classic steakhouse. At first glance we could see this was no
paint-by-numbers resto.

Starting with a massive bar area (read: Yaletowns new meet market) and a
four-level marble fireplaceto match the four levels of seatingthe space
is creatively ambitious. Designed like an art collectors’ private
members club, it seems like every wall has a gorgeous work, many from
Vancouver artists like George Vergette and Pamela Masik. No space goes
untouchedeven the elevator has a piece by legendary local designer
Martha Sturdy.

We headed straight up to the plush and private rooftop patio (finally,
outside seating in Yaletown that rises above street level) and tucked
into a shared plate of snap pea and asparagus tempura ($6.95) and a
classic 8 oz sirloin cut ($19.95) that we ordered Chicago style (charred
on the outside).

We always knew grilling the perfect steak was an art.
