Island Romance

September 17, 2009

Fans of Anne of Green Gables aren’t the only ones flocking to
the red shores of Prince Edward Island. With miles of sandy beaches,
gorgeous fall foliage and some of the freshest seafood in the world,
this little Maritime island is a perfect autumn getaway for two.

stay
Situated
in romantic and historic downtown Charlottetown, The Great George has
sumptuous king rooms and a fireplace to warm your toes on those cool
autumn nights. From $219 per night. 58 Great George St., Charlottetown,
1-800-361-1118, www.thegreatgeorge.com

eat
From clams to potatoes, the fall
harvest
is rich in PEI. For a truly authentic experience, slip into
your Wellies and head out for a Tong and Shuck boat tour to harvest your
own oysters straight from the sea. What could be fresher?

shop
Throughout the island you’ll find delightful
shops selling everything from handmade pottery and jewellery to artisan
vodkas. Our favourite was the Prince
Edward Island Preserve Company
, where we picked up the most
delicious blueberry lemon jam. www.preservecompany.com

do
The red sand and clear water beckon even when the
air is crisp. Head to PEI National Park for a stroll along the nearly
deserted shore. Warm up with a cup of tea and some delicious handmade
chocolates at Island Chocolates located in the charming historic village
Victoria-by-the-Sea. Or, if you find yourself unable to get a certain
redhead off your mind, Anne of Green Gables the Musical is now
in its 45th year at the Homburg Theatre in Charlottetown. Tickets at www.confederationcentre.com
