The prohibition era may be long gone, but were still drawn to dine in
the cool comfort of our local speakeasy.
We found Tuck
Shop hidden behind subtle signage in an off-the-beaten-track part of
town, and supped to music drawn from the 1920s. We started with a tender
octopus salad nestled in a mound of savoury hummus ($15) and a velvety
beef tartar topped with tangy celery remoulade ($13). Our main dish was
a crispy-skinned Mediterranean Sea Bass with clams enveloped by vibrant
yellow peppers and beans in a sip-from-the-bowl worthy broth ($45 for
two). Pretty soon we were chatting away with our table neighbours,
feeling rather smug about our delicious find.
Prohibition is passé. Indulgence is in.
