So what if The New York Times bestsellers list is overrun with
reality star "memoirs" and novels based on Twitter feeds – poetry, short
stories and novels are alive and well at The
Vancouver Writers Fest 2013.
Herewith, 3 picks to see live and in person.
Ontario’s Jowita
Bydlowska wrote one of the most praised and controversial books of
2013, Drunk Mom. She has faced heavy criticism for her blunt
portrayal of the life of an alcoholic new mother, and will talking about
it all on October 25. $17 at www.writersfest.bc.ca

Marisha Pessl’s breakout novel Special Topics in Calamity Physics
won her plenty of acclaim, including a spot on the top 10 books of the
year by the New York Times Book Review. She’s back with a new novel,
NIght Film, and will be part of the Up All Night panel (meaning, books
that keep you up past your bedtime). October 23, $19 at www.writersfest.bc.ca

We could all use a little more poetry in our lives: The
Poetry Bash includes a Pulitzer Prize winner, a Governor General’s
Literary Award winner and MacArthur Foundations fellowship recipient.
