Butter Makes it All Better

November 6, 2013

Eating healthy is important, but no one wants to blow out the candles on a hempseed bar.

For special occasions (baby showers, weddings, birthdays weekends), a proper treat is in order. Butter Baked Goods has been a sweet delight for years (in fact, it’s famous handmade marshmallows can be found from the local grocery store all the way to Japan), and now, many of its classic recipes – whoopie pies, cupcakes, cookies, s’mores, scones, loaves – have been shared by owner Rosie Daykin.

Butter Baked Goods: Nostalgic Recipes from a Little Neighbourhood Bakery is beautifully photographed by Janis Nicolay in a style that’s both retro and decadent – pink frosting piled high on a vanilla cupcake, triple decker chocolate cake and classic applie pie look like they came straight from grandma’s oven. Helpful instructions, like how to prepare a piping bag, are woven throughout, and we loved the green ribbon bookmark (the same one used to wrap packages at the bakery). As practical as it is pretty, you won’t find yourself searching specialty stores for single-use ingredients – staples like butter, sugar, flour, vanilla and a dash of nostalgia are all you need.

How sweet it is.
