Hawkers Market One-Year Anniversary

March 31, 2014

Monthly local food festival Hawkers Market recently celebrated its one-year anniversary in Vancouver. Solo-cupped 33 Acres of Ocean in hand, we meandered around participating East Van studios checking out the goods.

Riffing off of the Singaporean street-market concept, with an emphasis on promoting local, food-oriented small businesses, Hawkers (a.k.a. HWKRS MRKT) makes a pretty solid dinner stop—especially if you’re having one of those crazy “dessert first” kind of nights (we’re known to get wild). Speaking of dessert, the Candy Meister truck made an appearance, handing out free tastes of its traditional German sweets out front. We opted to try cherry hard candies, which made a Brown Paper Packages pink lemonade-flavoured ice cream sandwich eminently justifiable, too. But then we felt like we had to be adults, and duly hit Wonton Girl for taro-filled dumplings and tasty chive rolls drizzled with vegetarian hoisin sauce, followed by quinoa ravioli from Sincerely Pasta.

Not in Vancouver? Not to worry. Hawkers Market lands in Calgary April 5th and Edmonton on the 12th. —Adrienne Matei
