Vancouver Urban Winery has always been a great spot for a drink, and now, thanks to the recent addition of The Belgard Kitchen, it’s the perfect destination for a meal as well.
The Belgard is the first in a cool, two-part expansion the winery is seeing—the second being a soon-to-open craft brewery, which is great considering the old adage that one can never be too rich or too thin or live in a city with too many delicious local beers. We were lucky enough to have executive chef Reuben Major drop by, Urban Wood Co. apron on, to whip us up a lunch of his kitchen’s midday offerings.
The Korean Rice Bowl was an instant hit—with sriracha-laced gai lan and cabbage, edamame, kimchi, flank steak and a sunny egg, we could eat it for every meal. Chinatown Slaw with plum and ginger dressing is a crunchy, colourful nod to the neighborhood the BK lives in, and the Quinoa + Rocket salad came sprinkled with addictive candied walnuts and watermelon radish—a definite contender for “world’s prettiest identity crisis.” We also tucked in to the Railtown Wrap, a soft flatbread stuffed with meaty Portobellos, avocado and hummus, and the formidable Belgard Burger with Pemberton beef—plus lots of cayenne-spiked popcorn on the side. We glimpsed Belgard’s dinner menu, too, stocked with tapas like Bacon-Wrapped Dates and Rock Shrimp Ceviche (an evening visit is certainly in order).
It was an incredibly successful Monday. Now, if you’ll excuse us, we need a nap. —Vitamin Daily
