Just an hour’s drive from Kelowna, B.C., Silver Star Mountain Resort offers hiking, biking, berry picking and … wine tasting, of course.
hike: Jump on the chairlift at noon and head up onto the alpine, where plentiful hiking trails wind through fields of wild strawberries and huckleberries. Or jog the easy 3K Cross Mountain Trail straight out of the town centre, with its huge vistas and fields of red and purple wildflowers. Look out for mule deer, marmots, Steller’s jays and ground squirrels—we saw them all.
bike: Cross-country mountain biking is gaining in popularity every year with bikers from age 5 to 75. There are dozens of scenic trails to choose from in the massive bike park. Just like “skinny skiing,” this is an athletic sport where you earn your turns.
experience: Mile High Wine Tasting along the town centre’s charming main street is an annual summer event, now going into its third year. Discover new labels, like the sparkling rosé from Bella Wines of WestBank and Intrigue, the new venture from the winemaker at Grey Monk. Warm up for it at the 34th Fall Okanagan Wine Festival.
taste: The Summer Wine and Food Festival held at the beginning of August offers cooking demos and dinners from both local and visiting chefs. This year featured David Hawksworth of Hawksworth Restaurant in Vancouver.
stay: The Grande Dame of the mountain is Snowbird Lodge, with its private hot tubs and decks and huge rooms with full kitchens that feel more like an upscale condo than a hotel. 170 Silver Lode Lane, Silver Star Mountain, 800-663-4431
