Tulle skirts, pink and white balloons, sprinkles everywhere—the opening of Sweet Bake Shop in Yaletown resembled a five-going-on-35-year-old’s incredibly girly birthday bash.
Our dessert tooth was satisfied with double-chocolate cupcakes (gluten free (!) with not-too-sugary icing to die for), French cupcakes (macaron-topped) and peanut butter cookie sandwiches that will likely become our afternoon treat of choice.
Other offerings: vanilla bean sugar cookies, elaborate cakes and pretty, frothy meringue clouds that come in an assortment of different colours daily. The boutique bakery also offers non-edible sweets, like dessert-themed necklaces (macarons on a chain!), cute-as-can-be cake toppers, metallic candles and even custom matches touting messages like, "A party without cake is just a meeting" (we agree).
For this occasion, Marie Antoinette was spot on. —Kate LeGresley
