On until January 4th, Montreal’s Biennale features 150 works by 50 Canadian and international artists at Place Des Arts—including the following (favourite) pieces that will really allow you to explore the event’s L’avenir (Looking Forward) theme:
1. Eternity by Nicolas Baier: an impressive sculpture with a commanding presence, this piece—made of mirror-finish stainless-steel shards—rises 10 feet from the floor, spans 25 feet in length and is more than six feet wide. Gaze on it in total awe as you reflect on the notions of perception, transformation and implication.
2. 400 Nudes by Jillian Mayer: an assemblage of 400 nude selfies by women of all ages, shapes and races from the pool of millions available online, this piece means to tackle questions of identity, authenticity and sexuality.
3. TimeTraveller™ by Skawennati: a 75-minute film divvied into nine episodes covering 600-plus years of factual history. In the intro, you’ll meet Hunter—a Montreal Mohawk who seeks an alternative to the “over-mediated, hyper-consumerist North America” of 2121.
You’ll have the stop in to see the rest—happy art hopping! —Ariella Starkman
