Walking into The Wheel Club is like stepping back to a time when country music ruled and requests to dance weren’t made over text.
Established in 1946 as a legion, the club was turned into an iconic Canadian roots music venue by musician Bob Fuller in 1966. Today, it’s considered by many to be a Montreal institution, boasting great events like (one of our personal favourites) Hillbilly Night—a country themed, open-mic-style, old-fashioned hootenanny that originated 20 years ago but, by the looks of it, won’t be hanging up its boots any time soon. Do yourself a favour and make an appearance at The Wheel on a Monday—Hillbilly Night draws a mixed, relaxed crowd, looking to have fun. In other words, the perfect environment for a romantic, if slightly unusual, date.
Or, who knows? You could find a cute cowboy to corral. —Ariella Starkman
