Saturday, from 11a.m. to 9 p.m., 10 blocks of the Kits ‘hood will once again be transforming into Khatsahlano Fest, Vancouver’s largest free outdoor music and art festival, with an anticipated 160,000 guests. You’re probably planning to go already, but if you’re on the fence, here are 5 quick points to push you over to the fun side:
1) The dancing! Khats’ schedule is packed all day, with predominantly local acts, including finalists from the Peak Performance Project strutting their stuff, punk rockers (Vancouver’s the Pointed Sticks and Enigmas) amping up the crowds, and big time headliners like The Belle Game and Yukon Blonde, the latter being fresh of the release of their 3rd album (On Blonde, which is amazing. Listen to their dance-y single Saturday Night to get hyped).
2) Culture-crawlin’. This year sees Khats adding a brand new art component in partnership with Kitsilano Neighbourhood House. Established and emerging artists either from the West Side or with notable West Side influences in their work will be showcased at various locations up and down West 4th.
3) Style, Style, Style: This year also sees Khats’ first Etsy Marketplace: where local vendors and artisans will be selling their handcrafted, vintage and homemade wares. Check out all the incredible talent alive in our city, and pick up a souvenir to boot! Plus, at 1 and 4p.m., fashion shows by Vancouver Fashion Week will unveil inspiring trends. Fashionistas will be thoroughly entertained.
4) Food! Of course all our favourite food carts will be in fine form (plus our guilty fairground fave; sweet lime-spiked lemonade!) Plus local vendors, like Rain or Shine Ice Cream, will certainly be doing brisk business (get a peanut butter scoop with strawberry sauce or fudge). Mill St. Beer is one of the event’s sponsors, so those 18 and over can expect a beer garden stocked with their refreshing brews, too.
5) Us! Not ones to miss out on a party, we’ll be hanging out (near Etsy!), giving away goodies and copies of VITA magazine and inviting you to come take a load off in our oasis-themed booth. Ahhh! Plus, as always, we’ll have treats, prizes to giveaway, and fun tricks up our sleeve. Come say ‘hi’!
Bring sunscreen, dancing shoes and all your pals; this is one massive street party that’s not to be missed. —Adrienne Matei
