New Eats: Fat Mao

August 17, 2015

1Chef Angus An (Maenam, Longtail Kitchen) has just opened his long-anticipated Fat Mao (it means "lucky cat") noodle bar, and we’re in love.

Approachably priced with all dishes under $12, meals are inspired by An’s childhood, with touches of Taiwanese, Singaporean and Thai cuisine all orbiting an axis of really, really good, fresh noodles. We tried the Taiwanese beef noodles in a rich homemade broth, with wide, flat ribbons, tender meat and plenty greens atop, served alongside some very flavourful homemade XO sauce. Flawless. With a plate of kimchi (cuke, cabbage, pumpkin) and pickles, it made for a quick and filling meal, though other Asian homestyle items like the An Mama’s scallion pancake and braised duck noodles peaked our attention. So did dessert: mango shaved ice, available once the restaurant officially opens this Wednesday.

Nab a seat and you’ll be one lucky kitty. —Adrienne Matei
