Editors’ Holiday Netflix Picks

December 24, 2015

After a day of turkey and presents settling in for a holiday movie sounds about right. Here, our five Netflix faves.

A Very Murray Christmas: Director Sofia Coppola’s quirky style shines bright in this parody of the classic Christmas Special starring Bill Murray (think duets in matching turtlenecks). There’s not much of a plot, but the singing is funny and the cameos are classic (Chris Rock, Paul Shaffer, Michael Cera, Miley Cyrus, George Clooney). Pass the rum ‘n’ eggnog.—Sarah Bancroft, editor-in-chief

How The Grinch Stole Christmas: We love Jim Carrey’s take on the world’s biggest Christmas hater—and how about those wacky Whos in Whoville? A holiday treat for the family. —Krystin Tysire, promotions manager

Happy Christmas: In this low-key indie dramedy, Jenny (Anna Kendrick) crashes with her brother and his wife in Chicago for the holidays. While her stay comes with a few kinks—she practically burns the house down one drunken night—in many ways it’s just what the family needs. Mostly unscripted and with a stellar cast (hello, Lena Dunham and Melanie Lynskey), this is the perfect post-Christmas brunch watch. —Lise Boullard, managing editor

Arthur Christmas: Call in the kids and follow along with Arthur Christmas (the youngest son of Santa Claus), as he finds his place in the family business. A modern take on the classic Santa Claus tale. —Megan Bourassa, editorial intern

The Nightmare Before Christmas: In Tim Burton’s weirdly wonderful animated musical, the Pumpkin King of Halloween Town is tiring of the same old ghoulish festivities when he happens upon Christmas Town. Quickly falling in love with the holiday, he makes it his mission to hijack Christmas. But not all goes to plan… —Amy Dillon, Edmonton editor
