If Instagram created a restaurant, it would be The Mackenzie Room. From its painted church pews to its vintage pennants from small B.C. towns, to its wall feature of patinaed service ware, there’s plenty of Insta eye-candy. Diners are encouraged to stroll over to the chalkboard menu that changes daily to order cunningly named dishes like Thumper for Dinner ($27), a.k.a. a roasted rabbit leg. The best strategy, however, given the ambitiously priced entrées, is the I Want It All prix-fixe plan, which lets groups of four sample the whole menu for $51 each. Situated on a derelict block of what was once Japantown, across from Oppenheimer Park, the restaurant’s great soundtrack will be punctuated by the odd ambulance siren, but be happy that since most of the block is boarded up, there’s plenty of parking out front. — Sarah Bancroft
