Whether hosting friends for thanksgiving, the holidays, or just because, having a beautifully set table is a must. If only we had a clue.
Enter interior designer Stephanie Brown to our rescue; A leading talent, she’s one of the experts behind this year’s Dinner by Design, a two-night affair (in Vancouver this Sept. 15 and 16) featuring the city’s top designers, chefs and bartenders. For foodies, stylists and other creative types, it’s an event you won’t want to miss.
Back to our table setting dilemma. Here, Stephanie shares her top five tips guaranteed to wow our guests, and with the simplest of solutions we might add, too:
1. Charging Forward
A traditional charger plate is often used to add dimension and texture. However, look for more unusual or creative chargers, such as these square resin trays from Martha Sturdy. Or for a more rustic-modern look, consider marble or slate charcuterie trays as chargers.

2. Graphic Flatware
Silver cutlery is merely the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Flatware. Experiment with modern metal finishes such as Brushed Brass, Copper/Rose Gold, or even Black for a more modern and dynamic place setting.

3. Unlikely Linens
Rather than segmenting the table placemats, or channeling your Mom’s holiday set-up with a massive white tablecloth, consider instead purchasing a few yards of textural and interesting sheer fabric. Drape just over the table edges for a casual look, or run down the centre of the table as a tailed and modern runner.

4. Food as Art
Just as white is the perfect backdrop for your art collection, so too are white dishes for your food. Organic imperfect shapes provide an interesting contrast against other modern elements on your tabletop. These dishes from Mud Australia are the perfect mix of natural and contemporary.

5. In Living Colour
Instead of cut flowers that won’t last, opt for something that will keep for the whole season and beyond. Succulents in hues of green fit perfectly into table top terrariums and make a great centre piece.
