New(ish) Nosh: Gorilla Food

February 23, 2017

For years it was known to Vancouverites as raw-foodie heaven. Now, after months of speculation, Gorilla Food has re-opened its doors—only this time it’s a bigger beast in the tastiest of ways.

With chef-talent Aaron Ash at the helm, the plant-based menu at GF is a weekly changing rotation of collard wraps, soups and pizza, with regular features including pressed juices, smoothies, granolas and sweets. We tasted the so-called Main St. Monkey sandwich with its savoury avocado mash-up, zucchini hummus, olive tapenade and alfalfa sprouts on veggie-flax bread—amaze! Same for the huge, hearty bowl of warm miso mushroom soup made from a purée of greens, parsley, coriander and ginger and topped with zoodles and sesame seeds. So rich and smooth, you’d swear there was cream involved (there isn’t). We hope to try the raw lasagna, pictured, some day. Also on offer: to-go boxes and meal-plan options, and you can pre-order or opt for daily delivery (though the space itself is beautiful with plenty of seating, worth a sit-down).

Whether you’re raw, vegan or an easy flexitarian, Gorilla Food is beyond g-r-r-reat. —Aurea Dempsey
